Velvet 89 Celebrates Its First Anniversary With a Huge New Update
You might have heard about Velvet 89, the 100% free hidden object game from the small Czech team at Charles Games. It’s a powerful interactive look at the stories of ordinary people who took to the streets in 1989 and made the Velvet Revolution happen. The game even picked up the Social Matters award at Gamescom Latam 2025 for how it turns real history into something both personal and playable.
To celebrate its first birthday, the developers have released a major Anniversary Update adding an entirely new level set in the Moravian metropolis of Brno, along with 18 new items to discover across the packed revolutionary squares. Among them are real historical objects like typewriters, miner’s badges, and printed manifestos that add even more context and authenticity to the experience.
Velvet 89 now spans six levels across five cities, showing the movement from multiple perspectives including different genders, social classes, ages, and opinions to give players a rounded view of the protests that brought down the communist regime in Czechoslovakia.

Even better, the game remains completely free on iOS, Android, and Steam, with no ads or microtransactions, thanks to a collaboration with Czech NGO People in Need.
If you haven’t played it yet, now’s the perfect time to jump in and experience a beautifully designed piece of living history.
