Caroline’s Underworld
Caroline’s Underworld is an adventure game developed by Dead Curious Games, an indie team who met and began development in college. The player controls Caroline, a young girl who follows a goat down a hole and ends up in Limbo, a hellish and fantastical underworld. The story deals with loneliness, friendship and self-discovery, and follows Caroline as she tries to find a way out while the creatures she meets treat her with a strange irreverence. All of the game’s assets are digitally hand-drawn.
Progress is made through exploration and conversation. Caroline talks to the inhabitants of Limbo to gather clues, unlock puzzles, play mini-games and find the way forward. The game includes puzzles described as easy to pick up, and dialogue choices that may have consequences later in the story.
The Chapter One Demo has Caroline making her way through the winding paths and catacombs of Limbo to reach The Ferryman, so that she can descend further into the Underworld. The developers plan a full release with four chapters, adding three more areas with their own mechanics and environments, along with a conclusion to Caroline’s story. The music score is being composed by Carter Williams, a student at Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema, in collaboration with the team.
