Death by Taxes

Death by Taxes is a clicker game in which the player takes the role of a billionaire facing a tax bill. The player starts with one billion dollars, and the aim is to reduce the balance to zero before the bill is due. Spending is done by clicking to buy ordinary items such as coffee, food, cigars and gadgets in very large quantities.

Progress is built around a large skill tree containing abilities, stronger clicks, faster purchases and other upgrades. Players choose a path and stack its bonuses, and the tree extends further than it first appears. Skills and abilities can be combined so that each click has a greater effect. Collectors and other NPCs can be recruited to make purchases on the player’s behalf and keep parts of the spending process running, although they do not complete the task alone and the player must still use abilities.

At the end of each spending segment, the player faces a unique boss who attempts to stop further spending. Defeating a boss by breaking through its defences unlocks a new upgrade and more powerful ways to spend money, leading into more expensive purchases in the next segment.
