Grandma(88)
Grandma(88) is a hand-drawn mystery-thriller adventure with a player-versus-narrator structure. The player takes the role of a young woman visiting her dying grandmother and exploring the labyrinth of memories the grandmother describes. The grandmother acts as narrator, and she both guides the player and holds them back when they approach uncomfortable truths.
The central mechanic is contradicting the narrator. The player listens to the grandmother’s version of events and chooses when to challenge it. Each contradiction alters the environment, revealing or hiding fragments of her story. Rooms, characters and objects can transform as a result. Pushing too hard makes the grandmother angry, and she then refuses to share more. Being too cautious keeps the peace but leaves the player on the surface of her narrative. Trust with the grandmother is treated as a resource that the player must manage while looking for the truth.
The game has a non-linear story in which the player’s decisions determine how events unfold. Gameplay centres on exploring the various locations within the grandmother’s memory. The game is described as family horror, with its tension coming from confronting family members about their secrets.
