Gray Company
Gray Company is an autobattler roguelite developed around a mercenary company on a 12-battle campaign. At each muster the player recruits soldiers and arranges the order of the line, after which the battle resolves automatically. Campaigns take place across two regions, each with its own rival companies, warband cultures and painted battlefields.
The central mechanic is the ageing of soldiers. Each battle a soldier survives counts as a season of their life, and they progress through four stages: recruits become regulars, regulars become scarred veterans, and veterans eventually become graybeards, who are slower but provide steadying auras to the soldiers beside them. Soldiers who are retired with honours leave an heirloom for the next recruit in their lineage, and heirlooms are doubled in effect when carried by a member of that same lineage. Soldiers who die in battle leave only a memento. Rival companies also persist and age between encounters, and their surviving members remember previous meetings with the player’s company.
Between battles, road events, provisions and scout reports inform the decisions made at each muster. The game includes eight stacking Banner difficulty levels, 16 achievements and a saga ledger that records every soldier who served in the company. Each campaign concludes with a ledger of names and an account of how each soldier’s story ended.
