Honeycomb: The World Beyond

Honeycomb: The World Beyond is a survival and exploration game in which players take on the role of Hennessy, a bioengineer working for EON Corp. Hennessy is sent to Sota7, an alien planet, to search for knowledge intended to help address Earth’s ecological crisis. The planet contains a range of biomes, from open landscapes to underground caverns, each populated by its own plants and animals. Some of these creatures tolerate the player’s presence while others are hostile, and the game asks players to judge when to approach, keep their distance or retreat.

A central mechanic is bioengineering. Players scan flora and fauna to learn about their properties, then synthesise plant traits and manipulate animal DNA to produce physical changes. Different combinations can be tested and the results analysed to progress research. Alongside this, players gather resources and craft equipment, then construct a base where they can live, work and carry out experiments. Blueprints for base facilities are supplied through a system referred to as IVS, and the base can be expanded as research develops.

Survival forms the remaining pillar of the game. Expeditions into Sota7 provide materials and resources, and venturing deeper into the planet requires a greater understanding of its rules and hazards. The game has now moved out of development and is released on Steam, where it has passed 100 user reviews with a rating of Mostly Positive.
