Honeycomb: The World Beyond
Honeycomb: The World Beyond is a survival and exploration game set on Sota7, an alien planet. The player takes the role of Hennessy, a bioengineer working for EON Corp who is sent to the planet to gather knowledge intended to help secure humanity’s future, with the description referencing an ecological crisis on Earth. Sota7 contains a range of biomes, from open landscapes to underground caverns, each with its own plants and creatures. Some of these lifeforms tolerate the player’s presence while others are hostile, so part of the game involves judging when to approach, keep away or retreat.
The core mechanics centre on research and bioengineering. Players scan flora and fauna to learn about the world, then use that information to synthesise plant properties and alter animal DNA, producing physical changes in creatures. The game encourages trying different combinations and analysing the outcomes to advance the research. Alongside this, players gather resources and craft equipment needed for expeditions, with the description noting that the environment itself can be a threat.
Base building is another main feature. Players establish a base where they can live, work, craft and run experiments, using blueprints supplied by IVS, and can expand their facilities as their research progresses. The developer summarises the game’s features under four headings: exploration, crossbreeding, building and survival.
