Medieval Squad Tactics is a turn-based strategy game in which the player commands hero captains, and their squads follow behind them, rather than moving each soldier individually.

Medieval Squad Tactics is a turn-based strategy game in which the player controls heroes rather than individual units. Each hero acts as a captain who leads a squad, and soldiers are directed indirectly through their captain. This allows large armies to be handled without moving every unit or grouping them into stacks, so formation and positioning form the main puzzle.

Combat centres on flanking and formation. Attacking enemies from the side or rear can weaken their heavy formations, while overextending or allowing units to be surrounded can lead to defeat. The player has to balance defensive and offensive formations. Pressure on the player usually comes from enemy buildings that keep producing new enemies, and these buildings must be destroyed without leaving the player’s own units exposed.

The main mode is a campaign in which the player must win a series of maps. Heroes keep their stats and experience from one map to the next throughout the campaign.
