Syntax:Overload is a roguelite deck-building strategy game in which players chain programming-themed modules and relics to build combat sequences against malware-inspired enemies.

Syntax:Overload is a roguelite strategy game built around programming logic. Rather than playing cards in isolation, players assemble modules into chains that form a combat sequence. The game includes more than 80 modules and over 40 relics, which can be combined in various ways. Examples given by the developer include a Fire module that buffs the next attack and a Zip Bomb that consumes adjacent modules to produce a stronger single blow. The developer describes the design as favouring strategy over luck.

Players build towards different hacker archetypes, such as RAM Hoarder, Garbage Overflow and Pointer Shifting, and can either follow established builds or attempt their own combinations. Enemies are themed on malware, including Ransomware, Trojans and Crypto Miners, with a boss called the System Architect guarding the Kernel. Random events appear during runs, and a Dark Web Protocol lets players collect scattered data fragments to unlock hidden, higher-difficulty layers.

Progression between runs is handled through a Software Center and a BIOS system. Failed runs contribute to accumulated data, which can be spent in the BIOS to adjust starting parameters, expand memory and unlock new Operating Systems, which function as classes. The game uses a retro terminal aesthetic with CRT scanlines, glitch effects and pixel-art illustrations. Syntax:Overload is part of the Bahamut 30th Anniversary Indie Game Promotion Program.
