Big Dig is a short incremental narrative game in which you dig up historical artifacts to clear the way for a highway across the Animal Republic, then display your finds in a museum.

Big Dig is a short incremental game with a narrative focus, developed by two independent developers with assistance from friends. The player is recruited by Mayor Dog, whose election campaign centres on building a highway across the Animal Republic. The route passes through beaches, suburbs, lakes, middle schools and other locations, and the land along it contains historical artifacts that Mayor Dog wants removed so construction can proceed.

The core loop involves digging up these artifacts and expanding your operation as the road progresses. Players can hire a crew of helpers, acquire new equipment such as an excavator, and renovate a museum to increase profits. Artifacts recovered along the way range from tennis balls to dinosaurs.

The museum acts as a showcase for everything found during the dig. As it grows, players can add decorations, new rooms and other additions. The developers state that their aim was to take an established incremental genre and attach a narrative with a defined conclusion.
