CPU: Computing Potatoes Unlimited
CPU: Computing Potatoes Unlimited is a puzzle game set at a fictional company that builds Computing Potato Units, or CPUs, to order for its customers. Players take a role in the programming department, where each level presents a customer request, such as a sheep counting machine for a farmer or a device for calculating employee raises, and the task is to punch in instructions so that the potato workers process numbers to meet that need.
The factory is designed to mimic how a processor works, and the developer describes the underlying model as microprogramming, a practice in CPU design where the control unit is programmed to implement machine instructions. No prior programming knowledge is required to play. Puzzles are open-ended, and the game encourages iterating on a solution by punching in instructions, observing the results and refining the approach. There are more than 40 puzzles, and each completed solution can be compared against friends and other players using histograms that track cycles, instructions and memory usage.
A playground mode allows players to design their own challenges, and custom puzzles can be shared and played through Steam Workshop. An official soundtrack is also included.
