A maze-navigation game in which players take the role of Daedalus, sealed inside the labyrinth he built for King Minos, and must descend through forty hand-made mazes to reach the surface.

Forty Depths Beneath Knossos: The Minotaur’s Maze is set in the labyrinth of Greek myth. The premise is that Minos commissioned an inescapable maze, Daedalus designed it, and Minos then imprisoned the architect within it. The player controls Daedalus as he works through forty levels of his own construction, each filled with traps, hostile inhabitants, obstacles and dead ends. The mazes are hand-built and grouped into four regions, three of which are named as the Salt Cisterns, the Bronze Foundry and the Gorgon Deeps.

Alongside Daedalus there are four other characters trapped in the labyrinth, bringing the playable cast to five. These companions can be found and rescued during the descent, and the game allows the player either to escape alone or to attempt to bring the entire group out. Ten weapons and items are available, each described as having a specific use and an associated cost. Among the mechanics described are marking your route with chalk, moving quietly to avoid whatever hunts the corridors, consulting a map drawn by the player, and deciding when to expend a relic.

The game also includes a system called Favours of the Gods. By accumulating enough favour the player can gain access to two effects: the Stilled Hour, which stops the labyrinth around the player, and the Swift Hand, which increases movement speed. The developer states these must be earned rather than obtained through shortcuts. Additional features include Steam achievements, full controller support with an option to play entirely on keyboard and mouse, multiple save slots and Steam Cloud saves.
