You’re the new gate guard, which means you’re the only thing standing between your Lord’s castle and whatever chaos the outside world wants to drag in. Every noble, merchant, and peasant needs proper documents to get through, and it’s your job to check the seals, spot the forgeries, and decide who’s telling the truth.
It’s not just paperwork though. You’ll need a halberd to poke through carts in case that pile of cabbages is hiding something it shouldn’t, a plague mask to spot the sick before they wander in and infect everyone, and maybe some holy water for that suspicious coffin, whatever the widow says. Stay on top of the news too, because the list of who’s welcome and who isn’t keeps changing.
Gear costs money, and that money comes out of your own wages, so every tool you buy is a real choice. Let the wrong person through and things go badly. Turn away the right person out of paranoia and things also go badly. Somewhere in between is where the bribes start looking tempting, and where the fate of the kingdom quietly ends up in your hands.
