Heat Signature

Heat Signature is a game in which players fly a small pod through a galaxy of space stations, docking with spaceships to sneak aboard via their airlocks. Missions involve stealing loot, assassinating VIPs or rescuing captured characters, and can be approached through stealth, gunfights or the use of gadgets such as teleporters, stealth shields and subverters. Missions can be paused at any time, allowing players to plan actions and switch, aim or fire gadgets without time pressure.

Missions are randomly generated, combining different guard types, ship layouts and complications such as space battles. Completing missions contributes to liberating space stations from controlling empires, unlocking new gadgets and challenge characters. Players choose characters at random, each with their own starting equipment and a personal long-term goal, such as rescuing a relative or taking revenge. When a character dies, play continues with a new character within the same ongoing galaxy.

Ship environments can be partially destroyed using breach grenades or fuel barrels, with sections able to be blown apart and exposed to vacuum. The game includes asynchronous interaction with Steam friends: players can attempt to rescue a friend’s captured character, and retiring characters can leave behind a named item that may appear as loot for friends or future characters. The game does not feature a continuous narrative, other in-game careers, planetary exploration or multiplayer, focusing solely on spaceship infiltration.
