Hell Is Other People: Prologue
Hell Is Other People: Prologue is a free release containing the opening chapter of Hell Is Other People. Rather than using monsters, the game builds its horror around psychological and societal themes, with anxiety acting as the main obstacle. The player takes the role of a red-haired girl living in a world where everyone else appears in black and white and regards her as broken and in need of fixing. The antagonist is not presented as evil, but makes her life difficult through a persistent demand that she conform.
Throughout the prologue, the player is accompanied by an unreliable inner voice that is unkind and paranoid. Instead of collecting physical items, the player gathers ideas through a Social Skills collection mechanic and uses them to interact with the world. The central gameplay loop involves managing three levels, Overwhelm, Paranoia and Dissociation, each of which affects how the character perceives her surroundings.
The developer states that no generative AI was used in making the game. The full version of Hell Is Other People is available to wishlist on Steam. At the time of writing, the prologue holds a Positive user review rating on Steam, based on more than 10 reviews.
