Motivation Monsters
Motivation Monsters is a desktop companion and habit-building application. Alien creatures called Xenopals appear along the bottom of the desktop while the user works, remaining visible but positioned so as not to obstruct other windows. The premise is that the Xenopals learn to look after themselves when the user looks after themselves, so real-world activity such as self-care or time spent on a hobby is what drives progress within the app.
Each day the Xenopals prompt the user to take on a mix of task types rather than focusing solely on productivity, with the stated aim of avoiding burnout. Completing real-world tasks earns XP, discovers new creatures and unlocks transformations. Over time, Xenopals change physically to reflect accumulated progress, a process the developer refers to as Self-Actualization. The app is designed without penalties: there are no streaks to lose and no consequences for days when tasks are not completed.
The app includes over 60 tracks of DMCA-safe music intended for background listening during work. It also bundles productivity tools, including a task tracker or to-do list and a Pomodoro timer, alongside the creature collection and progression systems.
