Summer of Singing Insects

Summer of Singing Insects is a casual game built around a summer theme and the sounds of cicadas and other chirping insects. It is divided into several linked activities: playing music on a keyboard that uses insect chirps as its tones, catching insects in a moonlit forest, keeping them in breeding boxes and recording them in an encyclopedia. The game runs on Windows 10 64-bit and offers nine interface languages, including English, Simplified Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, French, German, Brazilian Portuguese and Russian.

The keyboard section provides a 25-key visual instrument that can be played with the mouse or a physical computer keyboard. It has three tone modes (a pure cicada electronic sound, piano blended with cicada chirps, and organ blended with cicada chirps), along with sustain, octave shifting, independent volume control and fully customisable key mapping. Players can import JSON or MID scores for playback and can also play local MP3 and WAV files. There are 42 insect tone skins in total, which are unlocked by catching the corresponding insects.

In the catching mode, each round is a 30-second timed challenge in which players spot and catch insects, with consecutive catches awarding combo achievements. The 42 insects are split into five rarity tiers: Common, Fine, Superior, Epic and Legendary. Caught insects can be placed into breeding boxes, where they move about, chirp in turn and respond to feeding, going quiet when approached and singing again once the player moves away. Each box has its own volume control. The encyclopedia lists every species with its appearance, rarity and wild spawn rate, and unlocked chirp skins can be applied to the keyboard with a single click.
