Summer of Singing Insects

Summer of Singing Insects is a casual game built around a summer setting and the sounds of chirping insects. It is now released and runs on Windows 10 64-bit. The game has three main parts: a virtual electronic keyboard that uses insect chirps as its tones, a forest catching mode, and a breeding box where captured insects can be kept and observed.

The keyboard has 25 keys and can be played with mouse clicks or a physical computer keyboard, with key mapping that can be changed to suit the player. It offers three tone modes: a pure cicada electronic sound, piano blended with cicada chirps, and organ blended with cicada chirps. Sustain, octave shifting and independent volume adjustment are included. There are 42 insect tone skins, which are unlocked by catching the corresponding insects, and the game can import JSON or MIDI scores for playback as well as play local MP3 and WAV files. In the catching mode, each round is a 30-second timed challenge in a moonlit forest, with combo achievements awarded for consecutive successful catches. The 42 insects are split into five rarity tiers: Common, Fine, Superior, Epic and Legendary.

Captured insects can be placed in a breeding box, where they move about, chirp in turn and react to the player. They stop chirping when approached for feeding and resume once the player moves away, and each box has its own volume control. An encyclopaedia records the appearance, rarity and wild spawn rate of every species, and unlocked chirp skins can be switched with a single click to change the keyboard’s timbre. The interface is available in nine languages, including Simplified Chinese, English, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, French, German, Brazilian Portuguese and Russian. Minimum requirements are an Intel Core i3 or equivalent processor, 4 GB of RAM, integrated graphics and 500 MB of storage.
