A miracle crop turned into humanity's downfall, and now Katherine just wants to get her daughter somewhere safe. Survival horror the old school way, with monsters, puzzles and nowhere left to hide.

Painted Black Games wanted to make something that felt like the survival horror games we grew up loving, and The Road of Dust and Sorrow is their shot at it. The world’s gone wrong here. A crop that was meant to save everyone from famine instead turned people into Dusters, feral things driven by addiction and hunger, and civilisation’s basically fallen apart. Katherine is just trying to keep her daughter Ava alive in all this, but a creepy preacher and his followers have other plans for what’s left of humanity.

You’ll be exploring rotting streets, ransacked buildings and overgrown ruins, piecing together what happened while solving puzzles and scavenging whatever you can find. Every locked door and every quiet corridor could be hiding supplies or something a lot worse. We built the world to feel abandoned but lived in, like people were here and then suddenly weren’t.

At its heart though, this is about protecting Ava. The world can fall apart around you, but she can’t. Painted Black Games leaned hard into that tension, into the fights and the running and the tough calls you’ll have to make to get her somewhere safe. It’s all wrapped up in beautiful pixel art.
