True Vikings

True Vikings is a story-driven game set in the early Viking Age, beginning in 849. The player starts as an ordinary Viking warrior in a small village in the North and progresses through a series of trials, conflicts and events. Depending on the choices made, the character can rise to lead a clan as a Jarl or a King, or reject the raiding life and serve a king instead. The story offers three paths: the Viking Conqueror, who rules conquered lands rather than plundering them; the Viking Raider, who seeks domination through raids and conquest; and the Defender, who sides with the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms against invasion. These paths lead to over 20 possible endings, and the game also includes romantic storylines alongside its battles.

Gameplay combines several modes. Side-view combat covers individual fights, tactical assaults and sieges put the player in the role of a commander, and strategic battles involve larger-scale decisions. Mini-games are also included. The developers list more than 2000 story backgrounds, over 500 character illustrations, over 150 quests, and more than 200 equipment items that are shown visually on the player’s character.

The setting draws on historical events across multiple regions of Europe. In England, the player takes part in the first campaign of the Great Heathen Army into Kent and Mercia around 850 and can alter its outcome, with later events including the capture of York in 867. West Francia in 858 is depicted during the rebellion of Robert the Strong and the flight of Charles the Bald, while Iberia in 844 features an invasion of the Caliphate inspired by the raid on Seville. Other events such as the sack of Utrecht by Rorik of Jutland in 850 are also woven in. The game aims to reflect Viking daily life, training and equipment, as well as the political structures, titles and historical figures of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of the period.
