Yami Kids

Yami Kids is a dark, retro-styled monster-taming RPG with a short story about twins Yuki and Yuumi Yami. Yuki is the older sibling by about five minutes and is protective of his sister. Yuumi is the younger twin, with an interest in fire and unsettling things. Both characters were shaped by their upbringing in the Slums, and the story follows their efforts to survive in the Overworld and the Underworld beneath it.

Players contract, train and battle with Oni, the game’s collectable creatures, and over 80 can be gathered. Combat uses classic turn-based duels in which one Oni faces another. Among the battles are Shadow Duels, which take place only at night against rival Contractors and their Oni teams. Losing a Shadow Duel sends the player to the Underworld, a location containing unusual items, unfamiliar areas and tasks to complete before returning to the world of the living.

The game pairs retro-style graphics with modern quality-of-life settings and presents its own variation on the established monster-taming formula. On Steam, its review rating has changed from Positive to Mostly Positive.
