Charlatan

Charlatan is a roguelike deckbuilder set on a haunted slot machine. Players spin the reels and can alter the odds using items such as magnets, stickers and forged tickets, building small wins into larger payouts. Each win allows the player to upgrade their deck.

Cards can be given active abilities, which are used at chosen moments to change the outcome of a spin. Before each run the player picks a soul, and each soul starts with its own set of abilities, so runs call for different strategies. The board itself can also be expanded during play.

The game has six locations, and the player chooses the order in which to visit them. Each location features bosses with their own abilities, and there are 24 bosses in total. The route taken can be planned around the direction of the player’s build. The developers state that the game was balanced so that runs can develop into strong combinations of effects.
