Farthest Frontier

Farthest Frontier is a town-building and survival game developed and published by Crate Entertainment. Players guide a small band of settlers who establish a town at the edge of the known world. They gather raw materials, hunt, fish and farm to sustain the settlement, and produce crafted items that villagers trade, consume, equip and use in combat. A pacifist mode is available for players who prefer to avoid fighting.

The game features over 190 buildings, a tech tree of more than 140 points, and a multi-tiered economy with 16 raw materials, 19 food types and 32 crafted items and materials. Town centres and housing advance through several tiers as the town grows. Farming involves 12 crops with differing characteristics, and players configure crop rotations, manage soil fertility, remove weeds and rocks, and guard against heat, frost and disease. Villagers carry out their jobs in real time, moving goods between work sites, homes, storage and the trade post, with roads, wagons and storage methods affecting how efficiently goods move and how much spoils.

Maps are randomly generated, with biomes and map themes, and players can set the amount of water and mountains and choose which resources appear. Difficulty can be customised, including switching off invaders and disease. Other systems include historical illnesses such as dysentery, cholera, scurvy and bubonic plague, which are managed through clean water, diet, clothing, healers and rodent control. Wildlife such as deer and bears can be kept away with fencing, and tree cover affects underground water supplies. Defence options range from wooden palisades and stone walls to towers, barracks and soldiers, with adjustable raider difficulty. Temples can be built, with faith customised through discoverable relics. The game supports modding through Unity development tools and the Steam Workshop.
