Please, Watch The Artwork
Please, Watch The Artwork is a surveillance-style game in which the player works a night shift at the MaMA, the Museum of Animated Modern Art. The core task involves monitoring camera feeds of animated paintings, spotting changes within them, clicking to report anomalies, and specifying the type of change detected. A zoom function allows closer inspection of details within each scene.
The game features over 40 paintings inspired by the works of American realism painter Edward Hopper, reinterpreted as animated looping scenes such as a midnight diner or a woman lost in thought. These are organised into 5 themed levels, each containing 6 to 7 paintings grouped by subject. A recurring element is a sad clown figure who moves between canvases, with his presence gradually affecting other paintings. The game includes no jumpscares or monsters.
Sound plays a functional role, as the game has no music but instead uses ambient soundscapes tied to each scene, including rain, city noise, and character voices, some of which may also serve as anomalies to detect. Three difficulty levels are available, including a cozy mode without time pressure or game-over conditions. The game supports multiple languages, including English, Dutch, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, German, Turkish, Russian, Japanese, Korean, and both simplified and traditional Chinese.
