VHS Nights: The Tidy Up Shift
VHS Nights: The Tidy Up Shift is set in 1992 and places the player in a new job at a local video rental store. The previous employee left a collection of 1,120 movies unorganised, and the shift ends only once every tape has been returned to its correct place on the shelves.
The core activity is sorting. Tapes are arranged by genre and by release year, and each of the 1,120 fictional movies has a unique parody title, a parody cast, a release year, a genre, a blurb and a set position on the shelf. No two movies share a title. There are 20 genres in total, including action, martial arts, horror, sci-fi, comedy, romance, thrillers, crime, fantasy, adventure, westerns, monsters, cult classics, family, teen hits, music and dance, sports, imports and anime, documentaries and holiday favourites.
Beyond sorting, customers return tapes that have not been rewound, and the player is expected to deal with these and other problems that arise during the shift while keeping the store running. Progress unlocks new abilities that allow the player to sort more quickly, manage the store and cope with a growing workload, with later stages described as a race against the clock.
