Diplomacy is Not an Option is a base-building real-time strategy game centred on defending a castle against large-scale enemy hordes, with over 25,000 enemies able to appear across a single playthrough. Players construct fortifications, manage armies, and develop an economy based on resources including food, wood, stone, iron, and gold. The game includes four modes: Endless Mode, Story Campaign, Challenge Mode, and Sandbox Mode, along with a Map Editor for creating custom scenarios on procedurally generated maps.

The game’s combat uses physical simulation for projectiles and units, including arrows, catapult stones, and enemies launched into the air. Players must consider sightlines, gate placement, and troop positioning, as well as manage civilian needs such as housing, food supply, and disease prevention to maintain a functioning settlement during sieges.

The story follows a kingdom in economic crisis due to an incompetent king, with peasants revolting over unfair taxes. Players can choose to suppress or support the rebellion, encountering factions including the Sarranga tribe and an undead faction associated with rock music. A magic system is included, featuring an active pause spell, soul crystal harvesting, magical monuments, and offensive spells such as fireballs and summoned ghosts. Trade is possible via a merchant airship that can deliver emergency supplies of food or stone.
