Northanger Abbey

Northanger Abbey is a visual novel based on the nineteenth century novel of the same name by Jane Austen. The player takes the role of Kit, Catherine or Christopher Morland, a seventeen year old from country England who is visiting the city of Bath for the first time. The game is a light-hearted coming of age romance that satirises the tropes of its own genre while exploring themes of gender, relationships and society.

The game includes all the key scenes from the original novel, along with new scenes and interactive choices, totalling over 60 thousand words. The player can choose the main character’s pronouns, presentation and personality, and these choices change how the story unfolds. There are full romance routes with Henry or Eleanor Tilney, shorter routes with Isabella or John Thorpe, and a Secret Route.

The soundtrack is orchestral and features classical composers including Bach and Vivaldi. Accessibility options include screenreader support, descriptions of music and images, and customisable font and text size. The game currently has 6 user reviews on Steam.
